Finally! I’m sharing our coastal bedroom makeover.
I’ve been wanting to share this post for quite some time, but as you know from my last post, I took a year long break from posting anything at all. To see my last post click here.
Today, I’m sharing our recently renovated guest bedroom. I started this project in November 2025 knowing full well that my mother would be moving in the summer of 2026. Until that time, it would be our guest bedroom.
The main paint colour on our second floor is Simply White by Benjamin Moore. I absolutely love that colour and wish I had’ve painted our entire house that colour, but one level is good for now.
I also wanted to make this room a little extra special as in the end, I knew it would be for my 85-year old mom. So many ideas were floating around in my head, but I know my limits when it comes to power tools etc, so I knew some of those ideas would have to be hired out.
Mood Board.
Here is my first mood board that I initially created … I leaned into the neutral colour palette for sure. The ceiling light fixture was existing at the time. I wasn’t sure I wanted to change it out.

Throughout our home, the accent colour is blue. I wanted to use a shade of pink in the guest bedroom to soften things up a bit for my mom. The Benjamin Moore website shows complimentary colours to match Simply White, so I went with Somerville Red. It turned out to be a beautiful accent colour.
Adding the millwork to the lower half of the bedroom wall didn’t pan out. I also am not good with hanging wallpaper, so those ideas soon fizzled.
The revised mood board looked more like this …

Getting Started.
Our home is well over 100 years old. There are dents and dings everywhere in the trim and walls, so I had a fair bit of patching to do before I could even think of painting. I started with the ceiling, then the walls then to the trim and doors. It was quite an ordeal for such a small room, but the colour turned out beautifully.

Once the room was painted, it was time to start adding the furniture and window treatments. That was the fun part. I had started picking things up one at a time when I could. I still haven’t found the perfect lamp for this room, but the one we already had on hand seems to be working just fine.
Reveal.
Here are a few photos of the finished guest bedroom. Most of the artwork was purchased from Etsy and the frames were purchased from IKEA. The artwork over the bed was one I had on hand already and purchased from HomeSense a few year ago. It worked perfectly in this room.

The closet was left till the end. I don’t know why I didn’t paint it when I did the main bedroom, but I procrastinated until almost the time when my mom moved in. I also had a motion sensor light fixture installed at high level. The closet is quite deep and it is hard to see what is behind the rod of clothes.

All in all, the room turned out beautifully. The light fixture was one of my favourite things in this room. I also loved the curtain rod. Before I end this post, I do want to thank my sister for purchasing the 6-drawer dresser for my mom. It looks beautiful in this room.
Most would think that reds would not be coastal, but I think it looks great in the guest bedroom. What do you think? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

This dresser looked nice in the guest bedroom, but it is too small for all the clothes my mom owns, so I had to move it out and replace it with the new 6 drawer chest. This one is very pretty though!
